Would you Trust an AI Team Member?

This study looked at how much trust people have in teams that include artificial intelligence (AI) compared to teams made up entirely of humans. They did two experiments, one with two-person teams and another with three-person teams, involving a total of 828 people.

In the two-person teams, trust between team members was lower when one member was AI instead of a human. This was mainly because people didn't see the AI as trustworthy, rather than because they felt less similar to it. Also, people felt less connected to the team and trusted it less overall when there was an AI member.

However, in the three-person teams, there wasn't much difference in trust between teams with AI and those without. Trust was mainly based on whether team members saw each other as trustworthy and similar.

Overall, this study suggests that what we know about trust in teams of only humans can help us understand teams with AI, but there are some differences we need to explore further.
